Hymn to Mars
May we honor & soothe what burns to temper by fire our purpose & passion
O Mars! O Ares!
Red of face and unyielding of fist!
You of the fierce fires of day!
You of the strategic flames of night!
Hear now how your deeds have earned you respite!
Battle-bloodied and ram-hearted, return to your restful reward.
Claim the laurels of Aphrodite's arms entwined with yours.
Let your passion and pride pursue only the pleasure of recovery as you await the next war.
Let us join you in the meats and honeys that celebrate your prowess with victorious feasting.
Breathe deep and savor the fruits and creams of Zeus, the ample abundance of your formidable father.
And as you enjoy what was earned, let us too learn to replenish, to be fed by more than the burning spices and fury of the fight.
Allow the lands of our bodies to move uninjured and unpillaged as you plunder instead the sweetness of the offerings extended.
Set your sword to the smith that your blade might be sharpened and let the whistle of the whetstone sing you to sleep in this moment's peace.
Reclined in the shade of dreams and let Luna, too, in her silvery beauty pass by, spared your wrath to wash your wounds.
And in such grace, show us how to honor the strength we expend with equal joy and to our welcoming health attend.
